When your pregnant client is exhausted by nausea…

Here is an Ayurvedic protocol to help them find relief.

Elevating your care

As birth workers, we know to encourage mothers to eat what they can.

Ayurveda beautifully deepens this by looking at 3 root causes of morning sickness:

  • Unmet pregnancy cravings. (Dauhidra Avamanana)

  • Aggravated upward-moving energy. (Vata Vaigunya)

  • The embryo growing & pushing upward. (Garbha Nimitha)

Step 1: Honor the body’s wisdom

In Ayurveda, cravings are considered precise communication from the body.

If a client says they have no cravings, gently explore.

  • Ask: “What is the ONE thing that sounds even slightly tolerable in this moment?” (Note: it may be as random as.. “sauerkraut.”)

A bite or two of that food, specifically, often opens a comfortable window to eat something more.

Step 2: Keep the stomach anchored

Nausea often peaks when the stomach is empty for too long, and why morning sickness if often worse upon waking.

The body has simply gone too long without fuel.

The Practice:

  • Graze all day long.

  • Keep a small snack right by the bed.

  • A midnight bite can create a smoother morning.

Step 3: Let the craving choose the remedy

Every body has unique needs.

  • Present the menu on the next slide.

  • Ask your client which option makes their mouth water.

  • The remedy they crave is the exact one to try.
